Volusia County embraces the territory that lies between the St. John's River on the west, and the Atlantic Ocean on the east.  Bounded by Flagler County on the north and on the south by Brevard and Seminole Counties.  

On December 29, 1854, Volusia became the 30th county of Florida.  Enterprise founded by Major Cornelius Taylor, a first cousin of President Zachary Taylor was named the county seat.  In 1888, the county seat was moved to DeLand.

In 1854, the main settlements in Volusia County were Enterprise and New Smyrna.  The late 1800s brought rapid development to the county, with railroads, telegraph communications and electricity.
